5 Games to Buy a PlayStation 5 Pro For

The PS5 Pro is Here! Announced by lead architect of the PS5 Mark Cerny at the start of September, the new console promises no compromises between fidelity and performance. Gamers will be able to pick up the £699 console and play their favourite games with fidelity mode graphics and higher levels of performance.

We know, that’s a lot of money. So, if you want to get one for less, we have a helpful guide that will help you get hundreds off your new console.

But back to the console. The PS5 Pro isn’t quite the end of performance modes. With the increased power and desire for photorealistic graphics, it’s likely many developers will still have modes that hold back on framerate in order to provide an increasingly detailed image.

For example, Remedy, developers of Alan Wake 2, have a new quality mode as well as a boosted performance mode (more on that later).

With that being said, here are 5 games we think will make the most of the new console, providing the best of fidelity and performance.

1. Horizon Zero Dawn & Forbidden West

If you were to write a list of the best looking PS5 games, there’s a very good chance you’d have Horizon Forbidden West very close to the top of that list. In fact, two years from its release, it still might be number one.

With that in mind, you might be thinking “what can the PS5 Pro really do to improve how this game looks?”.

Well, as is the promise of the PS5 Pro, you can experience the sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn at 60 frames per second, with a fidelity better than that of the original game’s quality mode.

If there was ever a game to test this promise, Horizon is it.

But that’s not all. Developers at Guerrilla, in collaboration with support studio Nixxes, have just released a remastered version of 2017’s Horizon Zero Dawn, the first entry in this best-selling series.

Whilst many rolled their eyes at this announcement, as the game certainly didn’t NEED a remaster, it’s safe to say it has definitely taken advantage of the PS5 Pro to provide something fairly remarkable.

With more than 10 hours of new motion capture, and a number of graphical improvements, this remaster is going to be well worth the £10 upgrade to owners of the original game.

Below are a couple of screenshots highlighting these visual improvements:

2. Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth

Perhaps one of the most notable upgrades amongst any game to be enhanced is Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth. For as stunning as the game’s fidelity mode was, those opting for a higher framerate were so disappointed that developer Square Enix added an additional performance mode. These modes allowed players to pick between “smoother” and “sharper” images depending on the maximum resolution of their display.

However, neither matched the level of detail reached by the 30 frames per second mode. The game, for as incredible as it was and is likely as it is to receive a nod for Game of the Year at the game Awards, was clearly compromised on the base console from a visual perspective.

After getting their hands on the PS5 Pro, Digital Foundry revealed the enhancements Rebirth would receive with the new console, and it really is night and day. You get the exceptional visual quality of the 30 frames per second mode at a consistent, smooth 60 frames!

If you haven’t already put 100 hours into this game like we have or are looking to replay it when the trilogy wraps up in a few years, the PS5 pro will be the place to play it!

3. Alan Wake 2

When the PS5 Pro was revealed, one of the big three pillars of the new console was the enhanced Ray Tracing capabilities of the machine. This is something certain developers have been incredibly eager to take advantage of.

Released last October, Alan Wake 2 quickly became one of the PS5’s must-play titles, accruing several awards for its storytelling and performances in a year stacked with excellent games.

If you already played the survival horror masterpiece, which now includes two equally excellent expansions, you’ll know how important light is to the gameplay experience.

Thanks to the PS5 Pro’s ray tracing enhancements, developers Remedy have been able to truly enhance the quality of reflections, volumetric lighting, and light structures throughout the game’s various haunting scenes.

Remedy say :

“In a game like Alan Wake 2, its complex light-material interactions and rich environments can make tracing, shading, and denoising even a single ray tracing effect too expensive to justify the cost depending on the hardware…The Pro’s improved hardware made it possible to build the acceleration structure for the most densely populated scenes, which was the major limitation before.

Here’s a couple of images they provide to show how the Pro console has done just that!

4. Ghost of Yotei

Announced in Sony’s latest State of Play event, Ghost of Yotei is the follow up to the wildly popular, and already gorgeous Ghost of Tsushima. Considering just how fantastic the original game managed to look on the PS4, we’re certain this new game will be a sight to behold.

Thanks to the PS5 Pro’s enhanced GPU, a game like Ghost of Yotei, which will rely heavily on the console’s GPU over the CPU, is sure to be hitting maximum performance.

To really make the most of a game like this, a nice OLED display will really bring out the best of studio Sucker Punch’s art direction and use of colour in their rendition of Japan’s majestic landscapes. But even without a significant investment in a new display – you can guarantee this game will be running at 60 frames per second AND be the best-looking thing you’ll play that year.

With this game being a PlayStation exclusive, unlikely to be coming to PC for at least 2 years after release, this really will be the best way to play for quite a while.

We can’t show any visual comparisons, of course, as the game is yet to be released, but we have faith this game will be a sight to behold.

5. GTA 6

Okay, we know, it’s not even close to being out yet, However, whenever it does launch, the PS5 Pro is where you’ll want to play it GTA 6.

Like Ghost of Yotei, Rockstar have revealed no plans to bring this game to PC as of yet, although they definitely will be down the line. With the game being locked to consoles, it makes sense that the most powerful console would be where you want to play.

With that being said, GTA 6’s performance does come with a caveat. According to Richard Leadbetter of Digital Foundry, speaking to IGN, he thinks it’s unlikely the Pro console will allow GTA 6 to achieve 60 fps, saying:

“No. Grand Theft Auto games have always run complex simulations that push the CPU hard, which is why every GTA game has initially launched on their target platforms at 30fps)”

Essentially, with the Pro only boasting an enhanced GPU, rather than CPU, it’s unlikely 60 frames would be achieved without some serious work. But who knows, we’ll just have to wait and see what Rockstar have in store.

And that’s it. These 5 games should all run great on the PS5 Pro.
