What are the New Features of the Nintendo Switch 2?
It’s been eight years since the release of the original Nintendo Switch in January 2017, so fans are anticipating some improvements since this initial release. From design improvements to compatible games, here are current predictions on what’s to come in the Switch 2:
- Design: A trailer for the new device was released in January, giving a glimpse into what it looks like. The design pays homage to the original device with red and blue shades on the edges of joy-cons and thumb sticks, but the device is noticeably black all over. This definitely gives the Switch an updated, refined look that some may prefer. Nintendo hasn’t confirmed any details on the display of the Switch 2, but from the teaser trailer we anticipate that it will be bigger than the original display.
- Joy-Cons: A signature part of the Switch undergoes a transformation based on what we’ve seen from the trailer. For starters, there’s a new square button on the right joy-con, but it’s hard to say what this could control. Secondly, instead of a locking system, the new joy-cons appear to ‘click’ on, leaving some to believe they’re magnetic. This could be revolutionary for Switch gameplay, both in terms of reducing drift and in improving stability.
- Games: It’s just as important to ensure that the games we know and love, as well as anticipated releases, will be playable on the new Switch. In the reveal trailer, fans noticed a new Mario Kart game being played, and discussion has arisen about GTA 6 being available to play on the Switch 2. We don’t know for sure which games will be compatible with this device, so we’ll have to wait and hear more from Nintendo about that.
- Specifications: There aren’t any official specifications announced by Nintendo yet, but being the second product in the range leads us to believe that there will be an improvement in graphics and processing power in the Switch 2. We wouldn’t be surprised if Nintendo decide to leverage AI-powered upscaling to follow industry trends, giving games a much better look and operation than we’re used to on these devices. Based on current rumours, the Switch 2 probably won’t be as powerful as the PS5 or Xbox series X, but it could contain features that rival the PS4, which is certainly impressive for a handheld device.
When Will It Release?
The question on everyone’s minds, is when will the Nintendo Switch 2 be released? Whilst we can’t give an exact date, it will definitely release in 2025, and we’ll likely get more information (including a release date) at the upcoming Nintendo Direct event on the 2nd of April. To celebrate the launch, Nintendo are even hosting experience days in cities across the world in April, May, and June, which hints at the device being released following these events.

How Much Will it Cost?
It’s difficult to put an exact price on this brand-new device without an official release date. That being said, Nintendo’s President Shuntaro Furukawa has dropped hints that the new device will be more affordable than people might think. The original switch currently retails for around £309.99, so we can expect the new device to retail for an equivalent or slightly elevated price. As is with the case of many consoles these days, the initial price isn’t so much the issue – it’s all the added costs of purchasing games. If you’ve got any old tech lying around, why not consider selling it? Even if it’s broken, we can recycle a variety of devices from iPads to Apple Watches, and provide quick and hassle-free payment solutions.
