Should You Sell Your Xbox and Start Streaming Instead?

Say goodbye to consoles and say hello to streaming!

Microsoft and Amazon are teaming up to bring an Xbox App to a selected range of Fire TV devices.

Although cloud gaming isn’t exactly new, this recent partnership is a big development in the future of console gaming.

As of July, you’ll be able to download an Xbox app on the Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2023) and the Fire TV Stick 4K (2023). Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will gain access to play any of the cloud-enabled games on the service, as long as they have a controller!

Can I stream games?

Unlike physical discs and downloaded games that play directly from your console, cloud gaming requires you to connect to a different device elsewhere. This other device is what’s actually running the game, and is then streaming this content to your display. Naturally, this requires a stable and speedy internet connection – preferably one that’s wired, if possible.

Cloud gaming is quite different to streaming movies, TV shows and music. So, even if you know your internet can handle Netflix and Prime Video, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re set up for streaming games.

Because games are interactive, the time between a button press on a controller and movement on the screen is crucial. If you’re pressing shoot, dodge, jump or grab and it takes a good few seconds for that to register on your screen, it could be game over!

If you’re unsure whether or not your connection can handle cloud gaming, you could test the service through the console you already have. Just head to Game Pass on your console, and look for any game with the Cloud logo in the bottom right corner. If the game you’ve loaded up runs fine, with minimal input lag, chances are your connection is good enough for the new app.

Time to sell your Xbox?

In theory, yes, you could sell your Xbox! If the only games you play on Xbox are through Game Pass, this new app should have you covered. However, if your games library is made up of physical games and individually purchased games, you won’t be able to access those, at least for the time being.

If you aren’t too reliant on your own games library to play, and you think your internet can handle it – why not sell your Xbox? A compatible Fire Stick is fairly inexpensive, especially compared to a pricey Xbox Series X. That means when you sell your device with us, you could pick up a new Fire Stick and still have cash to spare.
